Springtime Tree Care Tips

Welcome spring! Many Canadians are grateful for the warmth and opportunity to begin cleaning up our homes and yards, including caring for trees. Though your tree generally does not require a lot of attention, springtime is an opportunity to help it thrive and last long.

Here are some ways to care for your tree during spring:

Springtime Tree Care Tips

  • Clean the base

Leaves and twigs littering the ground around a tree can attract insects. Pests can infect the tree with diseases and block sunlight from penetrating the soil. Rake nearby debris and remove any burlap or coverings you used during the winter. Remove any decorations you’ve strung around the tree as well. They can interfere with growth and shape.

Springtime Tree Care Tips

  • Examine the tree for any damage

While your tree is still bare of leaves, you can see the branches and trunk more clearly. Look carefully and assess them for damage (such as cracks and discolouration). These could be signs of disease or other health issues. If you spot anything you’re not sure of, consult a tree care expert right away.

Springtime Tree Care Tips

  • Spread some fertilizer

In the winter, the soil doesn’t receive adequate nutrients. Fertilizing your tree helps it become stronger and defend itself against pests and disease. Spread a moderate amount of fertilizer on the ground around the tree, and be careful not to use too much. Mulch and fertilizer may be used together.

Springtime Tree Care Tips

  • Apply mulch

Cover the ground around the tree with some mulch. Mulching keeps the soil from drying, provides more moisture for the tree, prevents the growth of weeds, and protects the soil from extreme heat and cold. Take care not to let the mulch touch the tree, though, or it can encourage disease. Only apply mulch to surrounding soil.

Springtime Tree Care Tips

  • Prune

Pruning dead branches from a tree improves its health. However, if done incorrectly, pruning can harm it and/or damage its form. Small and light branches that need minor pruning may be taken care of by homeowners who have the right tools and know what they are doing. For large branches and trees, however, call in professionals. They have the knowledge, experience and equipment required to safely protect both the tree and nearby people/pets.
